An entryway that stays tidy

0
Entryway with an oak shoe bench, wall hooks and a tall floor mirror

The entryway is the smallest room in most homes and the one that works hardest. Keys, bags, coats and four pairs of shoes all land there in the same ten seconds, and if nothing has a place, the whole house starts to feel busy before you have even taken your jacket off.

Start with somewhere to sit

A bench changes more than you expect. Sitting down to take off boots keeps mud on the mat instead of the floor, and a shelf underneath gives every pair a home. Our Oak Shoe Bench is 100 cm wide — enough for two people at once and for six pairs of everyday shoes below.

Hooks at two heights, a mirror at one

Mount a row of hooks at 170 cm for coats and a second row at 120 cm for bags and children’s jackets. Hang the mirror so its centre sits at about 155 cm: everyone in the family can check a collar without stretching, and the reflected light makes a narrow hall feel wider.

Then keep one simple rule: one pair of shoes per person by the door, everything else back in the bedroom on Sunday. It sounds strict, but it is the difference between a hallway that stays tidy and one that needs tidying.
