In a Minnesota December the sun is gone by half past four, and a single ceiling light suddenly has to carry the whole evening. That is when a room starts to feel flat. The fix is not a brighter bulb but more lights, placed lower and spread around the room.
Three layers, three heights
Think of light in layers. A pendant or ceiling light gives general light; a floor lamp next to the sofa lights the reading corner; a small table lamp on a sideboard or nightstand adds a warm glow at eye level. Three sources at three heights are enough for most living rooms.
Choose warm bulbs of 2,700 K or lower and soft shades: linen and paper diffuse light evenly and keep the glare out of your eyes. Our Linen Floor Lamp and Ceramic Table Lamp were designed to work as a pair, at the same colour temperature.
Finally, put the lamps on dimmers or smart plugs. Being able to turn everything down to a third after dinner is what makes the evening feel slower — and what makes long winters a lot easier to love.

Swapped our cool-white bulbs for 2,700 K and added a floor lamp by the sofa. The living room feels like a different place after dark.
